Peter Principle – Personal story

Last week I wrote about how my client resolved her “Peter Principle situation” by demoting a person in a mutually agreeable manner.

I found myself fully unprepared for the position after immigrating to Canada back in 1997: I had landed a Project Manager job of which I did not understand the scope of responsibilities, in an industry that I had no prior experience in, and with English industry terminology that went straight over my head.
After 3 months of misery, our new office manager, Guus Wijte, called me in the office, he correctly summarized the situation, and told me to go sit behind a computer and learn AutoCad and Drafting.

I was lucky in sitting next to Herschel de Jong, who taught me everything, to the point that about 2 years later I was ready to move back into Project Management.
I’ve been thankful to these 2 gentlemen ever since.

The experience told me that “demotion” is sometimes the best thing that can happen to you. Unfortunately, it is seldom applied in situations where people do not function.
